Capstone Methodology

I will be exploring the topic of grief and trauma through the subject of war and abandonment, by researching the following:

• Documentaries and news articles
• First and secondhand accounts online
• Academic reports on guilt-based PTSD and shame in personal and cultural contexts
• Academic reports on natural process explorations of rust/eco printing and indigo dye
• Sampling with my own knowledge and skills in the studio
• Using technique and tutorial books on the bookshelf in the studio

This supports my concept by expanding my knowledge on both the technical side of the techniques I will use and the more psychological and personal areas of my theme.

Next I will move to testing and exploring the following techniques:

• Rust printing
• Eco printing
• Indigo dyeing and overdye
• Embroidery and beading
• Sewing, both machine and by hand for lettering
• Lino printing for motifs

These will imitate decay and weapon fragments as well as text commentary and drawings through symbols and motifs. This topic relates to me personally as I’ve been affected by the war in Ukraine and want to explore how this affects a person emotionally and physically.

The outcome I will get from this is a series of large works that will have many if not all of the textile techniques applied to them. To convey both the physical decay of things damaged by war and the mental decay that comes with shame and guilt of being cut off from that suffering but still being affected.
